Opening Celebration-Epidemics: Diseases Gone Wild

June 23, 2019 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

On Sunday, June 23, from 3 – 5 pm at the historic Belton Train Depot, the Belton Area Museum Association celebrates its newest exhibit Epidemics: Diseases Gone Wild with a community-wide health fair.

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the worldwide Spanish Flu epidemic that made its way to rural Anderson County by spring of 1919, this exhibit will explore the cultural and medical repercussions of this 20th Century epidemic and celebrate the medical advances in all areas of the health care industry since then.

Artifacts on display include vintage or antique items involving the dental, medical, ocular, chiropractic, and laboratory occupations, and show how medical practices have changed over the years. A collection of 18th and 19th century medical tools and a mock up of an early operating room are centerpieces of the exhibit.

Hands-on displays will allow visitors to try out vintage medical equipment, use an ultraviolet light to learn how germs are spread, and grow their own petri dishes of bacteria, bringing the world of the unseen into focus.

During the opening celebration, a community health fair will be held. The Belton Lions Club will share information about diabetes prevention, the newest health platform for this organization, in addition to taking in donations of eyeglasses and selling their famous brooms.

DNA Project Consulting will provide genetic cancer screening tests for those who qualify at the health fair. Completed by a simple oral swab, patients will gain information about potential genetic dispositions for eight hereditary cancers. Many insurance programs make the test free of charge for patients and information will be sent directly to one’s primary care physician.

“This swab could provide patients with potential life-saving information and possibly help entire families based on information gained at the health fair,” said Katie Mumblow, Genetix LLC Consultant.

Other practitioners including homeopathic healers, chiropractors, dentists, physician’s assistants, and the Blood Mobile are expected to participate.

For more information, please contact Abigail Burden, [email protected] or by phone at 864-338-7400.

Sponsored by the City of Belton HTAX and Anderson County ATAX, the exhibit will be on display through August 24. Museum Hours are Wednesday – Friday, 9 -2, and Saturday 10 – 12.
