Treasure Salvager and Armchair Tour of Spain
Join us Thursday, Feb. 22, for an interesting presentation that takes you on a journey from the wrecks of the Spanish Treasure Fleet of 1715 to an armchair tour of Spain in 2015.
Right after receiving a certification in underwater archaeology, Burgess Shucker worked alongside the famous Mel Fisher and his crew of treasure hunters.
Mel Fisher is best known for discovering the Spanish treasure ship the Atocha and for recovering the many exquisite pieces of gold and jewels estimated at a value of 400 million dollars.
Shucker will share his diving experiences on the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet that sank off the coast of Ft. Pierce, Florida. He will show recovered artifacts from those dives and talk about the preservation process he was involved in throughout the two summers he worked on these wrecks.
Dr. Russell Benton is best known as the “most traveled Alum of Erskine College,” having visited every continent of the world. He will share video and photographs and talk about his trip to Spain in 2015. For an armchair tour of Spain, this is a “don’t miss” opportunity to travel!
The event is free to all guests and will begin at 6:30 PM at the Historic Belton Train Depot, 100 N. Main Street, Belton.
For more information, please contact Executive Director Abigail Burden at 864-338-7400.
This presentation is held in conjunction with the Anderson International Festival, a biennial celebration of connections in Anderson County to foreign industry and culture. This year’s festival is entitled Mucho Gusto Espana!
Join us at the Belton depot for a 300-year tour of all things Spain!
