Solar Eclipse

August 21, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Free

A total solar eclipse will cross the continental United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina on August 21.  The last time a total eclipse crossed the United States from sea to sea was almost 100 years ago on June 8, 1918.

Belton is one of South Carolina’s premiere positions to see the longest duration of the event as we are directly in the path predicted for the sun’s traverse across the sky.  The eclipse will start just after 1:00 pm in Belton; the total eclipse will start at 2:30 pm and last for 2 minutes and 37 seconds.  This phenomenon is a truly historic event and a wonderful opportunity to view one of nature’s most stunning displays.

The 2017 eclipse in either total or partial phase will be seen by over 500 million people in North and South America, Europe and Africa.  In the United States millions will gather along a tiny ribbon less than 100 miles wide to see totality, the complete blocking out of the sun by the Moon which will reveal the solar corona.  The rest of the country will be able to see a partial eclipse.

Special activities are planned by the Belton Area Museum and the Belton Center for the Arts.  The Museum will be open special hours from 10:00 to 4:00 for people to view the Air, Wind & Space exhibit.  Visitors will also be able to make a device that will allow safe viewing of the solar eclipse.  The Museum will also be selling Moon Pies.  The Center for the Arts will offer live streaming of the total solar eclipse via NASA EDGE.  The webcast will begin airing at 11:45 am.  Eclipse safety glasses will be available for $3 and hot dog plates with chips and soda will be offered for $5.
