S. C. Chili Cookoff Championship Present $16,000 to Local Non-profits During First Standpipe Sounds
The first Standpipe Sounds event of the year was held Tuesday, June 13 On The Square in downtown Belton. The event featured a Mexican food truck and entertainment by John Breffle presenting “Remember Me,” a Willie Nelson Tribute Band. The free event was sponsored by the City of Belton, The Belton Alliance and the Combo Kings and was attended by 140 people. Three more Standpipe Sounds are scheduled to begin at 7:00 this year:
- July 11-Ryan Pitts and the Southern Gentlemen
- August 8-Fish Out of Wateer
- September 12-Combo Kings
Prior to the entertainment S. C. Chili Cookoff Chairman Gene Jameson reported on this year’s event, which was held April 22-23. Although the early morning saw heavy rains, it turned out to be a beautiful day with record attendance! The event featured 40 chili cooks, numerous other food and craft vendors and entertainment by the Combo Kings. The winners of the chili competition qualified for the World Championships which will be held later this year in Myrtle Beach. Jameson explained not only is it a great event that brings positive exposure to Belton, but thanks to our sponsors and the hard work of many it provides funding to five non-profit organizations offering service to the community. Jameson thanked presenting sponsor Deals Galore and other major sponsors Clinkscales Chevrolet, D & B Glass, Leadec and Maynard’s Home Furnishings. The results from this year allowed the Cookoffs to provide $16,000 to 5 area non-profits, including:
- Belton Alliance
- Belton Area Museum Association
- Belton Center for the Arts
- Belton Interfaith Ministries Association (BIMA)
- Belton Masonic Lodge #130
The 2024 S. C. Chili Cookoff Championship is scheduled for April 20-21.
