Belton Area Museum Association’s newest exhibit, Portraits: An Historical Lens at the historic Belton Train Depot.

The exhibit features portraits from earliest tintypes and daguerreotypes to modern digital selfies. Interesting stories and anecdotes are included about the people, both ordinary and famous, who appear in the portraits.

Vintage and antique camera equipment is also on display. Interactive activities including a photo booth with historic clothing and accessories to wear and a mix-and-match facial collage activity make the exhibit fun for all ages.

A selfie mosaic made from 820 submitted online selfies of over 4000 people will be revealed at the opening.  All those who submitted photos are encouraged to join us at the opening to be recognized.

Local artist Taylor Butler will also be drawing caricatures of visitors free of charge.

Sponsored by Spartan Photo Center, The Legacy of Anderson, Walmart,  City of Belton HTAX and Anderson County ATAX, the event is free for all to attend.

In addition to the opening, several ancillary activities have been planned during the exhibit run.  On Wednesday, Sept. 19, from 10 – 11:30 AM, home school students are encouraged to sign up for a photography class.  For $2 per student aged 7 – 12 years, students will learn the basics of photography and the science behind the craft.  The course will be taught by BHP News Chronicle photographer Norma Hughes-Smith.  Registration is required by Friday, Sept. 15, by calling the museum at 338-7400.

From now until Sept. 28, BAMA is accepting submissions for a teen photography contest with the topic “Not Your Parent’s Portrait.”  All area students from 9th– 12th grades are encouraged to participate.  Rules and regulations are listed on the BAMA Facebook page.  The winners will be revealed during the Standpipe Heritage and Arts Festival on Saturday, Oct. 6.

On Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 PM, historian and amateur photographer Dr. Don Kay will host a workshop on preserving photographs.  Cost to attend will be $5 for non members and free for members of the Belton Area Museum Association as part of the genealogy series Family Trees and Me.

The Belton Area Museum Association is a collective of three museums:  the Ruth Drake Museum of local history, the SC Tennis Hall of Fame, and the North End Gallery where interesting rotating exhibits on topical subject matter are displayed.

The exhibit Portraits:  An Historical Lens will be on display during regular museum hours until Dec. 15.

The exhibit and all the other museums are available for viewing free of charge during museum hours Wednesday – Friday, 9 AM – 2 PM, and Saturday, 9 AM to 1 PM.  Or contact BAMA Director Abigail Burden at 338-7400 or email at [email protected] to schedule a group tour.

The historic Belton Train Depot is located at 100 N. Main Street, City Square, Belton, SC.
